Shabana Azmi REACTS To Kangana Ranaut's 'Show Courage By Not Wearing A Burqa In Afghanistan' Comment Amid Hijab Controversy
Shabana Azmi has reacted to Kangana Ranaut's Burqa post amid Hijab controversy
Amid the ongoing hijab controversy, several celebrities voiced their opinion over whether or not female students should be allowed to wear Islamic head covering to schools and colleges. On Thursday, Kangana Ranaut shared her thoughts on Instagram. The actress had shared a collage of two contrasting photos of women- one showing them in swimwear and the other in burqas.
The photo was captioned as, "Iran. 1973 and now. From bikini to burqa in fifty years flat. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." She added, "If you want to show courage, show it by not wearing burqa in Afganistan. Learn to break free, not cage yourself." Shabana Azmi, who is known to speak her mind, shared a screenshot of Kangana's post on Twitter. She wrote, "Correct me if Im wrong but Afghanistan is a theocratic state and when I last checked India was a secular democratic republic?!!"
Previously, actress turned politician Hema Malini had reacted to the controversy and told ANI, "Schools are for education and religious matters should not be taken there. Every school has a uniform that should be respected. You can wear whatever you want outside the school."
For the uninitiated, the Hijab row started in Karnataka in December last year when a few students started coming to the government pre-university college in Udupi wearing Hijab. Some Hindu students turned up wearing saffron scarves in order to protest against it.
The row spread to other educational institutions in different parts of Karnataka, and the protests took a violent turn. The government on Tuesday also declared a three days holiday for the institutions to 'maintain peace and harmony'.
